Cruise single cabins: what the lines actually offer

Real single cabins that carry no supplement exist at AIDA, at TUI Cruises and at Cunard — but only on specific ships and in small numbers. Everywhere else the cabin is priced for two people, and booking it alone means paying a supplement on top of the fare.

Why the supplement exists at all

Cruise fares are quoted per person based on double occupancy, so the line budgets two paying guests per cabin. Travel alone and the second berth stays empty while the cabin is still occupied. The supplement is how the line closes that gap.

That is why cabins built for one person from the outset are the only arrangement where the maths works in a solo traveller's favour. They are smaller than a double, but they carry no surcharge — and because a ship only has a handful of them, they sell out first.

Which lines run real single cabins

AIDA Cruises

On the two Helios-class ships, AIDAcosma and AIDAnova, there are two categories built for one guest: an inside single cabin of 10 m² and a balcony single cabin of 10.5 m² with balcony, shower room and sofa bed. Neither carries a supplement. AIDA states that the number of these cabins is limited and recommends booking early. Across the rest of the fleet the normal rule applies: 70 percent on top of the fare for single occupancy, and 10–50 percent on selected sailings. Source: aida.de

TUI Cruises (Mein Schiff)

TUI Cruises runs inside and ocean-view single cabins on Mein Schiff 7, Mein Schiff Relax and Mein Schiff Flow, with a balcony single cabin added on Relax and Flow. The ocean-view versions have daylight and a sea view, which makes them the more comfortable end of the single categories. Source: meinschiff.com

Cunard

Cunard operates four ships: Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Anne. Single staterooms in the Britannia Inside and Britannia Oceanview categories are available on the first three. Queen Anne, the newest ship in the fleet, has none — so if a Cunard single stateroom is the goal, the ship matters. Source: cunard.com

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line markets dedicated solo staterooms under the Studio name. Which ships carry them and how large each one is varies by ship class, so that is worth checking directly with the line before booking. Source: ncl.com

What actually helps in practice

The biggest lever is dull and constantly underrated: book early. A ship has a handful of single cabins and they go long before departure. Start looking four weeks out and you are no longer choosing between a single cabin and a supplement — you are choosing between a supplement and staying home.

If single occupancy of a double cabin is the only option left, the same percentage hurts far less on a cheap inside cabin than on a balcony one, simply because it is applied to a lower base fare. And where a line only reduces the supplement on selected departures, as AIDA does, the sailing date moves the price more than the cabin category does.

Always check the specific terms with the line itself. Supplements, promotions and the availability of individual cabin categories change by season and by sailing.
