You cancel a German car insurance policy with one month of notice to the end of the policy year, which for most contracts means by 30 November 2026 for a switch on 1 January 2027. Beyond that, there are three extraordinary routes: the special cancellation right after a premium increase under Section 40 VVG, cancellation after a claim under Section 92 VVG, and changing cars. Only cancel once your new contract is confirmed, otherwise you risk a gap in cover.

Key facts at a glance

  • 1.Deadline 30 November 2026 (a Monday): last day for the ordinary cancellation if your policy year ends on 31 December. The date of receipt counts.
  • 2.Special cancellation right: after a premium increase you can cancel within one month under Section 40 VVG, even if only the type or regional class pushed the price up.
  • 3.After a claim, both sides may cancel (Section 92 VVG), until one month after the settlement is completed.
  • 4.Order matters: first sign the new contract starting 1 January 2027, then cancel. Your no-claims class moves with you automatically.
  • 5.German template letter further down, with notes on proof of receipt and the online cancellation button (Section 312k BGB).

1. Deadlines and dates 2026/27

Most German car insurance contracts run per calendar year. The ordinary notice period is one month to the end of the policy year. If your contract ends on 31 December 2026, your cancellation must reach the insurer by 30 November 2026. The deadline falls on a Monday in 2026, so there is no weekend extension this time.

Important: Not every contract ends on 31 December. Check your individual policy year in the insurance certificate, mid-year contracts have their own cut-off. Independent guidance on cancellation rules is available from the Verbraucherzentrale.

2. All cancellation routes at a glance

Besides the regular deadline, German insurance contract law provides several extraordinary ways out. The table shows which route is open when, and what to watch out for.

Cancellation typeDeadlineLegal basisGood to know
Ordinary cancellationOne month to the end of the policy year, usually 30 NovemberSection 11 (2), (3) VVG together with the policy terms (AKB)The letter must have reached the insurer by the deadline, not just been posted.
Special cancellation after premium increaseOne month after receiving the notificationSection 40 (1) VVGApplies when the premium rises without better cover, including increases from new type or regional classes.
Cancellation after a claimUntil one month after settlement is completedSection 92 VVGBoth parties may cancel, regardless of who caused the accident.
Sale or change of carAfter the sale, details in section 5Sections 95, 96 VVGThe policy first passes to the buyer, unused premiums are refunded proportionally.

You can read the provisions in full at gesetze-im-internet.de. For the ordinary cancellation, your policy terms (AKB) apply alongside the VVG.

3. Special cancellation after a premium increase

The most common reason to cancel outside the deadline is the premium notice that arrives in autumn. If your insurer raises the premium without improving the cover, Section 40 (1) VVG gives you one month from receipt of the notification to cancel. According to German consumer advice centres, this also covers increases caused purely by a new type or regional class.

Typical triggers

  • +Premium increase without better cover in the annual notice
  • +Higher type class for your car model
  • +Higher regional class, for example after moving
  • +Removed discounts that raise what you actually pay

How to proceed

  1. 1Read the notification carefully and note the date you received it
  2. 2Compare tariffs and sign the new contract
  3. 3Cancel in writing within one month, template below
  4. 4Keep the confirmation and proof of receipt

Practical tip: Contracts concluded online can also be ended via the cancellation button that providers must offer under Section 312k BGB since 1 July 2022. Registered mail or a confirmation of receipt remains the safest proof.

4. Cancelling after a claim

After an insured event, Section 92 VVG allows both sides to terminate the contract, no matter who caused the accident. The right expires one month after the settlement is completed. Insurers occasionally use this route themselves, in which case you need a new provider anyway.

Whether cancelling after a claim pays off is a calculation of its own: a settled liability or comprehensive claim downgrades your no-claims class, and the new insurer asks about previous claims in the application. Compare with your actual, downgraded class, otherwise the quotes are fantasy prices.

Good to know: Being cancelled by an insurer after a claim is nothing you need to hide, but many application forms ask for the reason. Answer truthfully, otherwise you put your cover at risk.

5. Changing cars, selling and the eVB number

When you buy a different car, you need no cancellation reason at all: the new vehicle gets a new contract, and you pick the insurer freely. If you sell your current car, its policy first passes to the buyer under Section 95 VVG. The buyer and the insurer can then cancel the transferred contract (Section 96 VVG), and premiums you did not use up are refunded proportionally.

To register a car in Germany, the registration office requires an electronic confirmation of insurance (eVB number). Your new insurer usually issues it within minutes, often directly after the online application.

Deregistering instead of selling: If you only deregister a car, many insurers let the contract rest free of charge. When you register again later, the contract and your no-claims class revive. Ask your insurer about the terms of this Ruheversicherung.

6. The right order and your checklist

One mistake keeps coming up: people cancel first and then start looking. Do it the other way round. The cancellation only goes out once the new contract starting 1 January 2027 is confirmed. If an insurer rejects your application or takes longer to accept it, you stay covered throughout, a car without valid liability insurance may not be driven in Germany.

1

Check classifications and paperwork

Look up the new type and regional class of your car, and have your no-claims class and annual mileage ready.

2

Compare and sign the new contract

Compare with your real contract data, choose 1 January 2027 as the start date and wait for the acceptance confirmation.

3

Cancel the old policy

In writing by 30 November 2026, quoting your policy number and licence plate. Secure proof of receipt, template below.

4

Check the no-claims class transfer

Once the new contract starts, check the policy: are the no-claims class, driver circle and mileage correct?

Have these details ready for the comparison

  • Vehicle registration document (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I) with HSN and TSN codes
  • Policy number and end date of your current insurance
  • Current no-claims class for liability and comprehensive cover
  • Annual mileage in kilometres, estimated realistically
  • Driver circle: who drives the car regularly, and how old are they?

7. Template cancellation letter (in German)

A cancellation needs no reason and no special wording, it just has to be unambiguous and arrive on time. German insurers expect the letter in German, so use this template as it is and fill in your details:

Vorname Name
Strasse Hausnummer
PLZ Ort

An die
[Name der Versicherung]
[Adresse der Versicherung]

Versicherungsnummer: [policy number]
Amtliches Kennzeichen: [licence plate]

[signature]
Ort, Datum

Translated, the letter says: I hereby cancel the above insurance contract with due notice to the end of the current policy year, 31 December 2026, and ask for written confirmation of receipt and of the contract end. For a special cancellation, add the reason and the date of the insurer's letter to the subject line, for example: "Ausserordentliche Kündigung nach § 40 VVG wegen der Beitragserhöhung, mitgeteilt mit Schreiben vom [date]".

Secure proof: Send the cancellation by registered mail or get the receipt confirmed. If the deadline is ever disputed, the only thing that counts is when the letter reached the insurer.

8. Type and regional classes: the silent premium driver

The type class rates the claims record of your car model, the regional class the statistics of your registration district. Both feed directly into your premium and are recalculated every year by the GDV, the German insurance industry association, covering all 413 registration districts and thousands of car models. A worse classification can raise your premium although nothing about your situation changed, and that is exactly when the special cancellation right from section 3 applies.

Liability

The lower the class, the cheaper the premium

Partial cover

24 type classes (10 to 33)

Full cover

The classifications for the 2026 policy year are already published, the 2027 classes are expected in late summer 2026. More depth in our guides: Type classes 2026 and Regional classes 2026.

9. Lowering your premium when you switch

How much a switch saves is individual. German consumer advice centres and Stiftung Warentest point out that premiums differ considerably between providers. Just as important as the price is what the new tariff actually covers, the cheapest contract helps little if key components are missing when you need them.

Where you can save

  • Annual payment instead of monthly instalments
  • Higher deductible, if you have reserves
  • Workshop binding, if free choice of garage is dispensable
  • Realistic, not inflated annual mileage
  • Restricted driver circle
  • Telematics tariff for safe drivers, check the data terms first

What the new tariff should include

  • A high blanket liability sum, 100 million euros is common
  • Waiver of the gross negligence objection in comprehensive cover
  • Mallorca clause for rental cars abroad
  • Marten bites including consequential damage
  • Extended wildlife damage clause, animals of all kinds
  • New-value compensation for newer cars

If a car purchase or financing is coming up anyway, it is worth looking at the loan comparison in parallel. Current tariffs are in the car insurance comparison.

10. Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

By when must I cancel my German car insurance to switch on 1 January 2027?

Most German car insurance policies run from 1 January to 31 December. The ordinary cancellation must reach your insurer by 30 November 2026 at the latest. What counts is the date your insurer receives the letter, not the date you send it. Check your policy year in the insurance certificate, because mid-year contracts have a different cut-off date.

What happens if I miss the 30 November deadline?

The contract normally renews for another year, and an ordinary switch is only possible the following January. The special cancellation rights remain untouched: if your premium goes up, Section 40 of the German Insurance Contract Act (VVG) lets you cancel within one month of receiving the notification, even after the deadline.

Do I have a special cancellation right when the premium increases?

Yes. If your insurer raises the premium without improving the cover accordingly, Section 40 (1) VVG gives you one month from receiving the notification to cancel. According to German consumer advice centres, this also applies when the increase comes purely from a new type class or regional class. Read the letter carefully and act within the month.

Can I cancel my car insurance after a claim?

Yes. After an insured event, Section 92 VVG allows both sides to terminate the contract, you as the customer as well as the insurer. The cancellation is possible until one month after the claim settlement is completed. Keep in mind that a settled claim downgrades your no-claims class and the new insurer will ask about previous claims.

Do I have to cancel myself, or does the new insurer handle it?

Many insurers take care of the cancellation for you if you give them a power of attorney. If you want to be certain, cancel yourself as well and keep proof of receipt, a duplicate cancellation does no harm. Contracts concluded online can also be ended via the cancellation button that providers must offer under Section 312k of the German Civil Code (BGB) since 1 July 2022.

Do I keep my no-claims class (SF-Klasse) when switching?

Yes. The no-claims class belongs to you and the insured risk, not to the insurer. The new provider requests your claim-free years from the previous insurer. After the switch, check your new policy to make sure the class was transferred correctly, because it largely determines your discount.

What about coverage during the transition?

Cover must continue without a gap, a car may not be driven on German roads without valid liability insurance. Sign the new contract with a start date of 1 January 2027 before you cancel the old one. If you register a different car, the registration office requires an electronic confirmation of insurance (eVB number) from your new insurer.

How much can I save by switching car insurance in Germany?

That depends on your car, region, no-claims class and current tariff. German consumer advice centres and Stiftung Warentest point out that premiums differ considerably between providers. A blanket saving cannot be promised seriously, only a comparison with your real contract data shows your individual potential.

Can my old insurer block the switch?

No. If you cancelled on time and in the correct form, the contract ends at the agreed date. Problems practically only arise from unpaid premiums. Settle outstanding amounts and keep proof that your cancellation arrived on time.

What happens to the insurance when I sell my car?

When you sell the car, the policy first passes to the buyer under Section 95 VVG. Both the buyer and the insurer can then use their cancellation rights. Premiums you have not used up are refunded proportionally. For your next car you choose the insurer freely, because a new contract is concluded.
